New Southampton cruise terminal named
Southampton’s fifth cruise terminal is going to be called the Horizon Cruise Terminal.
MSC Cruises and Norway Cruise Line are building the new facility to be used this summer.
The name was chosen after almost 4,000 suggestions were submitted in a competition to name the terminal.
The fifth dedicated cruise terminal at the port will be powered by solar panels mounted on the roof; ships will also have shore power connections installed.
“With track construction, the port will be welcoming ships alongside from the summer,” Southampton port owner and operator ABP said.
Director Alastair Welch said: “We selected this name as the shape of the terminal roof is such a distinctive silhouette on the horizon as you come through Dock Gate 10.
“Cruise represents such an important aspect of the city’s heritage, culture, and history, and we liked how the name suggests a fresh start after a tough year.
“We knew asking the public to help us name this key component of the city’s future would inspire fantastic ideas and we are very pleased with the strong response.”
“We are very excited to welcome our first cruise passengers this summer at the Horizon Cruise Terminal, and the new terminal will be a distinctive addition to the city’s horizon line.”
