Sleek and black on the outside, bright and white on the inside, Blackbird is the latest addition to the Tregulland & Co holiday accommodation portfolio in the south west of England. This luxury floating suite is located on a freshwater lake in North Devon and offers a slice of the group’s signature interiors in the form of a luxury repurposed narrowboat. Three nights stays start from £480 with bookings opening in the next few weeks.
Blackbird started life as a traditional canal boat and has been totally refitted to offer an open plan living space perfect for two with ensuite shower room, as well as its very own cool bankside ‘boudoir bathhouse’ with elegant roll top bath.
Located at the far end of a privately owned three acre lake teeming with fish and other wildlife, the backdrop of mature oak and beech ensures total privacy for couples looking to escape off grid to this haven of tranquillity rocked to sleep by the gentle swell of Blackbird on the water.
While there are a couple of other boats moored on the large landlocked lake, each boat is positioned to ensure a totally private outlook, tucked out of view of neighbours. Blackbird is the first of a duo which will be offered at this location by Tregulland & Co.
On land there are 20 acres of newly planted woodland to explore on foot and lots of wildlife to look out for. Take a walk, dangle a line in the water to catch a rainbow trout for supper, or just sit back and relax and listen to the birdsong. During the summer months wildflowers flourish attracting clouds of butterflies and dragonflies: Simply bliss.
It is just a five minute drive into Holsworthy for Waitrose and the weekly farmers’ market and 20 minutes to the coast for clifftop walks and surfing/ body boarding at the stunning National Trust Sandymouth Beach, Bude or Widemouth Bay.
The main narrowboat space has a warm yet sleek monochrome 11m x 2.5m internal space with white-washed timber cladding, bespoke sofa cushions, a wood burner for chillier evenings, reclaimed flooring and slate kitchen work top. There’s a compact but fully kitted out galley, king size bed (400 thread count bedding and feather duvet) with stunning lake views and an adjacent shower room and loo with REN products.
Step off Blackbird and onto the grassy bank for access to the private boathouse, or perhaps more accurately the ‘Bathouse Boudoir’. This elegant space is made for indulgent relaxation, with a loveseat, dressing table and a beautiful William Holland verdi gris slipper bath which looks out across the lake. Take a soak as the sun sets and watch out for kestrels and buzzards. The boat is well stocked with books and binoculars for wildlife watching. Solar panels line the roof earning this retreat its off grid status.
Nuts and Bolts
With patchy mobile reception and no internet provided at Blackbird (although you may get some 4G), guests are encouraged to take the opportunity to switch off and enjoy the surroundings. There is a portable music player with CD and radio player, Bluetooth and AV-In jack.
Located on the border of Devon and Cornwall, it is only a twenty minute drive from Dartmoor or the Atlantic Coast making Blackbird the perfect base to explore the south west from.
Nearby Holsworthy is a lively town in the heart of a farming community. The local beef is famous and cream teas, good local ice cream, cider and pubs abound.
