The Royal Caribbean Group named Dr. Calvin Johnson global head of public health and chief medical officer, a new position.

Johnson, formerly Pennsylvania’s secretary of health, will lead the company’s global health and wellness policy, manage its public health and clinical practice, and determine the strategic plans and operations of its global healthcare organization.

He will also collaborate with the Healthy Sail Panel to ensure the company establishes and implements its protocols and recommendations, the company said.

“Calvin’s extensive experience in public health and clinical care will help us raise the bar on protecting the health of our guests, crew and the communities we serve,” said Richard Fain, CEO of Royal Caribbean Group.

Johnson was most recently principal at Altre Strategic Solutions Group. He is the former chief medical officer for Corizon Health, served as secretary of health for Pennsylvania from 2003 to 2008 and was medical director for the New York City Department of Health from 1998 to 1999.

Royal Caribbean Group is the second cruise company to create a new position around its Covid-19 response. Norwegian Cruise Line in June said that every ship would have a public health officer, responsible for the oversight of all sanitation and outbreak-prevention initiatives and for monitoring the day-to-day cleanliness of all public areas and accommodations.
