British Airways has announced that it will begin testing the IATA Travel Pass on flights from Heathrow to Geneva and Zurich from 1 June.
The app can be downloaded onto a mobile device directly from the app store. When the app is downloaded, customers create a secure account and are presented with the entry requirements for their destination. When British Airways customers book COVID-19 tests through an authorized provider, the results will be uploaded into the app automatically by the laboratory.
Once the app checks that the customer meets the entry requirements for the destination, it will notify the customer that they are ready to travel. IATA and British Airways’ parent company, International Airlines Group (IAG), have been working together to co-develop the app, which is now being successfully piloted by other global airlines, including Etihad, Emirates, Singapore Airlines, Copa Airlines, Qatar Airways and many more.
British Airways’ Chairman and CEO, Sean Doyle, said: ‘We want the travel journey to be as frictionless as possible and we’d like to share our learnings to help the travel industry regain its footing.’
“We know that digital travel passes are part of the solution and they will also play a key role in offering those travelling the reassurance they need before they arrive at the airport. We hope to be able to offer a customer-friendly digital option for every British Airways international route that requires proof of government-mandated COVID-19 status documentation.”
Furthermore, British Airways is currently testing the digital travel app VeriFLY on routes to the US, France, Ireland, Barbados, Bahamas, and Canada, as well as all inbound international flights. When a customer has had their travel documents certified through the app, they will be able to check-in through either ba.com or the British Airways app and download their boarding passes before leaving for the airport.
BA now allows customers to upload their negative Covid-19 test results and other travel documents directly to ba.com for verification before travel to Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and Portugal.
